It's not even that she was going to raise the alarm - she went for a knife, they struggled, he falls off the bed with his hand on the chain - his options are to let go and try to reason with her, strangle her until he thinks she's passed out and stop before she dies, or keep strangling her until she's dead.
The first basically kills him, the second risks killing him, the third is the safe option, and the one he goes for.
I think the fact that we never get to know how much of what she said, and what her side of the story is, is more of a bias, to be honest - did she ever love him? Did she turn against him when he tried to send her away? Or what?
I think the story is generally about creepy unpleasant people. Which as a choice, is fine by me. What bothers me more is the people who look at the characters and decide that some of them are actually nice. Like the people who decided that because Jaime was nice to Brienne he was a Good Guy, ignoring his previous awful actions!
I think the investment of people (myself included) in having been wanting Jaime to be on a redemptative story-arc is precisely because the vast majority of the characters are creepy and unpleasant? And when I engage with stories, I like to have people I can root for. Stories... usually have heroes
( ... )
I don't think George believes in redemptive story-arcs. I don't think he believes that real people work that way. _Some_ people might learn things, but nothing so simple as "becoming a better person". All of his characters have done good things and bad things (well, with a couple of exceptions), and they're a mixture of different impulses, needs, and drives.
I did like that Tyrion clearly felt awful about killing Shae. And yeah, it's hard to tell about her switching sides, although I have seen people go from completely in love to hating the person who pushed them away.

It#'s not just the TV series either - in the book there's a scene with the Three Stooges:
