At least one of those "would be banned today" adverts is a fake:

It's a good one, but looking at it I can see clear signs of fakery. The font for the paragraph block doesn't look right for the period, and the big giveaway for me are the use of "teen" and "pre-teen" in said paragraph. The former is unlikely to have been used at the time, and the latter is definitely iffy.

That said, on a casual glance, it convinces. To which, I say to the creator; well played, sir.

My commute is technically longer now (well, the journey home is) but I find it far less stressful. I think it's because when I lived in Stirling I had to wait for an unspecified amount of time at a cold and windy station with no real shelter for a train that might or might not turn up and may or may not have seats (and cost a lot of money) Now that I get the bus home across Edinburgh, it may take longer at peak time, but I can generally be sure a bus will turn up within a few minutes of me getting to the stop (and if it's full, I can just get one a few minutes later) and it won't cost me a terrifying amount of money on a monthly basis.

That's a good point - having decent transport makes commuting much less annoying/frustrating.

It's a cracking point. I've been doing the same commute for eight years (more or less), and what suited me just fine for most that time is now becoming quite annoying. I'm not sure why (though it's probably down to more housing estates but still same road capacity despite increased usage), but since this summer the roads have been *much* busier; where once I'd hit a certain point before stop-start traffic, I'm now hitting traffic about a mile earlier. On bad days - which, as I say, since summer is most days - my commute ends up taking 20 minutes longer than it used to ( ... )

I have two commute options - walk/train/(optional tram)/walk, which takes about 45 minutes in total, or cycle for almost 22km, which takes around an hour (plus some cleaning/changing time at the work end). I usually ride two or three days a week, work-from-home one, and take the train for the rest.

So far I don't seem to be suffering any of "obesity, neck pain, loneliness, divorce, stress, and insomnia", thankfully ... I think it helps that on the train, I time things so that I mostly get a seat and can tune the world out and catch up on Twitter or read a book. My suspicion is that those issues are more common when commute means driving ...

I commuted for an hour by train for a couple of years. Hated it with a passion. Come the end of the day I don't want to be stuck somewhere surrounded by people, I want to be at home, destressing.
