Looking more closely at the article, Edinburgh is the second best city to live in _out of a sample of eleven British cities_. That's not at all the same as the second best place to live in the UK.

I've not spent enough time in Edinburgh to comment on the Athens* of the North. However, I have spent quite some time in Bristol (which came top in the sample), and large parts of that city are an utter shithole.

* I wonder if this is the compliment it used to be...

Oh yes, I always take such surveys with a pinch of salt.

Doesn't stop me reposting them when they say nice things about home, of course :->

And we Glaswegians love being talked down. It stops us being swamped with tourists every August, for a start...

Rubbing up against all those tourists might shift some of the dirt.

One of my friends has only been in the UK a couple of years, and went to visit an Edinburgh sauna assuming it would be a place for some taking in healthy and invigorating steam.

Apparently the staff explained her error to her before things got weird, and she left somewhat surprised.

There _must_ be a sauna somewhere in Edinburgh that's actually a sauna!

Perhaps ones attached to gyms and sports/health clubs?

Probably, yeah.

Not so useful if you don't want to be part of a gym, I guess.
