To be fair, my local council was a Con/Lab alliance where I grew up!

Well it was a stormy night that did it- the Liberals said that it wasn't necessary to spend money on sea defences- the year before the sea walls proved inadequate and a large part of the town flooded. After that the Conservatives and Labour Party agreed to the coalition to keep the Liberals out... they kept going in coalition for quite a few years.

Local politics can be odd.

Seems reasonable in that case. It's government's job to keep an eye on the long-term, and if they weren't able to make sure that intermittent disasters were catered for then they didn't deserve to be running the council (and I say that as a generally Lib-Dem voter).

I also enjoyed http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/archives/2013/10/04/the_meanest_mother_in_the_world_.html which seems at first glance to be the opposite of the "give kids more autonomy" school, but I think is really talking about a different class of events.
