I haven't been through an airport in a couple of years. Do any of the new security systems replace old ones, or are they just adding more and more layers of redundant security theatre?

This has replaced the people that used to come before the security check-in (you now swipe your boarding pass, rather than handing it to someone who does it for you) and some of the people who make sure you stick to the queue (the cameras check people's movements).

How necessary that is...
