Steer clear of Facebook’s Home for Android cartesiandaemon April 15 2013, 09:42:08 UTC
I think "facebook has designed a mobile phone OS" is news, but "it's crap that tries to take over your life" isn't :)

Well, they could have just made it part of the lock-screen, and not _completely_ taken over the whole interface. That would probably be nmore attractive to most people.

I honestly didn't understand what it _did_ do, so I am totally missing the point. Just that I assumed it would be radioactive and I shouldn't touch it with a bargepole, and if it's "radioactive and poisonous", or "radioactive and explosive" or "radioactive and corrosive and hitler" then that doesn't really make a difference, I still don't want to touch it with a bargepole... :)

It basically replaces the UI of an Android phone, taking the place of whatever existing Launcher app you're using.

Which would be fine, if it basically added shortcuts/info from Facebook. But instead it does that _and_ makes it harder to get to your actual apps.

Elon is taking us to Mars. Well, not me. danieldwilliam April 15 2013, 10:31:43 UTC
Hilarious comments on the Elon Musk We’re All Going To Mars Article.

I particularly liked the conversation that I am summarising as

“But how will people pay for things to be sent to Mars if Mars can’t send anything back?2

“Woowie, It’s MARS man. MARS!”

“But there won’t be any exports from Mars. “

“Mars, Mars, Mars!”

“Balance of Trade? Anyone? Bueller?”

“Elon is taking us to Mars to work as sex slaves for eternity.”

Mars needs sex slaves!

And yes, this would be a one-way trip to start with. With no real reason to go there, other than really wanting to. After all, so far as I understand, there's nothing we can get on Mars that we can't get here.

Not at the momment but by the time we’ve exported a few million rich middle aged men sex slavery will be a growth industry ( ... )

Yeah. I watched a family watching TV for 30 seconds, feeling increasingly more uncomfortable, and wishing I could tell them!

I did the same and couldn't agree more. I love the Russian security guard office, the peaceful poolside in Key West and a Japanese shrine framed in cherry blossom. Horrid that companies are watching staff so closely at their desks. I wonder if these people know.

Is the 'crying son' tumblr real? It was funny for the first two or three, but on realizing just how many and how frequent, I can't help but think that kid actually has a problem.

I think it's real, and I'm torn between "That's hilarious" and "That poor kid", depending on whether I'm underthinking it or overthinking it.

I'm surprised so many here are so wrong about "Google Glasses".
It's not a product. It's an early conceptual prototype.
Wearable cameras the size of map tacks will be here in a week or two, and cheap as dirt a month or two later. With billions of people online, there will be myriad applications we here wouldn't dream of. With augmented reality apps in the cloud, people with excellent vision may start wearing glasses just to get all the environmental extras. You'll be able to aggregate innumerable shots of anything publicly visible into detailed 3D models, and take it from there. Likely in real time.

about the internet: It's earlier than you think.
