The fanfic article is not entirely accurate. Real Person fanfic doesn't dominate the genre (it certainly exists in force but it's not the majority), and there's a pretty big divide between those who find it harmless/appealing and those who find it creepy to write about real people as opposed to fictional characters.

As regards teens using it as an alternative method of exploring sexuality, however, I'd say that article is spot on.

When I was a lad in Australia a comic and satirist called Andrew Denton hosted a show called the Money or the Gun. The show closed each week with a cover of Stairway to Heaven (including the famous Rolf Harris cover). Some good, some not so good. Some unusual, some pretty straight.

The album of the best versions is worth a listen to if you can find it.
