Interestingly whilst the proposed bill will permit the reigning monarch to marry a Roman Catholic, nobody is proposing to reform the law preventing the monarch him/herself from being a Catholic. Perhaps in another 500 years that might get repealed.

Well quite. Arguing that the monarch doesn't need to be a member of the Church of England is the same as arguing that the Pope (the one in Rome, not any of the other ones) doesn't need to be a Roman Catholic.

Of course we could always separate Church and State, and I'd be all in favour of that. But until that happens, how could the law change?

Does it only refer to Roman Catholicism or to all religions that are not C of E?

Good question! I think they were only banned from marrying Catholics though.
