I needed a more complicated mesh than I knew how to make in Wings. I decided to learn how to use Blender (inspired by Zagupi/HBC's HBC-00008: How to use BlenderBlender's UI is not exactly intuitive. Sculptris is VERY VERY much worth checking out. It's the simplest core of 3d sculpting, with all the simple stuff very simple. You start with a sphere and squash/stretch/pinch it. Easy.

Don't forget about Truespace - it was commercial, then MS bought it and gives it away for free now. Commercial-quality polish and tutorial videos on their site.

There's also Autodesk's XSI Mod Tool, which is AutoDesk(!!!!) and free.
