You know the drum emphasis after someone makes a joke... that ba dum Bump?

What's that called?

It's not a drum roll.  Or a drum beat.

Erg.

At the moment, I'm going with:  Charlie mimed a drum response.   But that's definitely a rough draft place holder.

Anyone?  Bueller?

THANK YOU! I know that the term is so commonly used for this purpose that it has become the accepted term (like kleenex is for all brands of facial tissue), but an actual rimshot is a different beast. *twitch*

Properly speaking, a rimshot is a stroke on the rim of the drum instead of the head. It is often associated with that situation.

Actually it is a stroke on both the head and the rim, making a unique sound.

I knew it was rimshot because Gabe Kaplan guest-starred on Murder, She Wrote many many years ago and several times in the episode his character boasted that he was the only comic on the circuit who did his own rimshots. Accompanying the boast as an audio illustration, as it were.
