The Dark Knight

If Jonathon and Christopher Nolan don't get a 'best original screenplay' nomination for The Dark Knight, I'm going to be very, very annoyed.  Not that the Academy will care but still...

Here's a very interesting commentary on that screenplay. I don't have anything like enough education to have an opinion on its validity, but I know and admire the writer.

Note that this is not actually an LJ reference.

I thought the movie was awesome, but the Academy doesn't usually honor anything I think is awesome. I got my ticket a few hours before the show and I don't think it completely sold out (but I saw it in a small theater in Maine so maybe that's not that surprising).

Screenwriting isn't one of the perceived biggies (except among writers *g*) so there may be a better chance.

Or at the VERY LEAST at nomination!

I would love to see Heath Ledger at least get nominated for something for this role; it's possible that will happen, but it'll be a bit tainted by his death. Did he only get the nomination because he died? I mean, on a level, I don't care either way (since I think he deserves it), but still.

Also, I am not entirely sure he didn't drive himself crazy playing the Joker that way.

i kind of agree. i don't think he drove himself crazy, per se, but i think the joker bothered him enough that he needed the pills he took in order to get any sleep and not have that persona haunt him. in a way, it's like the joker really did claim his victim. sad, but really hard to say.

He went right from the Joker into a Terry Gilliam movie and that can't have been much lighter given Gilliam's love of the grotesque.

The Academy doesn't give Posthumous Oscars very easily.

"Only one actor has won an Oscar after death, Peter Finch for 1976's Network." - Reference Source

I checked at the Oscar homepage and that statement is correct. Many more have been nominated for a Posthumous Oscar, but never won. Let's hope that Heath Ledger is oscar winner #2.

But does it count as an "original" if it's based on the DC books?

Depends on how much actual material made it in. (there's a complex ruling thingie) But I'd be happy with a best adapted nomination.
