it's testing games in thier alpha and beta phases and looking for bugs, glitches and other things. For example typos in text, something not activating like a pannel in the game, an ability that's not working as intended, holes in the enviroment or enemies not working properly ( like a faulty AI or doing too much damage or not enough).

Essentially I get the job of the guy who gets to find and deal with all the small things that make bad games bad and a lack thereof in good ones. In return I get paid and the opportunity to play games before they are released to the public.

i've been wanting to do that!! i was actually hoping to get a summer job in video game testing... damn you :P but if you find out that they need more people, please let me know!

by the way, i thought video game testing was supposed to be in your home, and not coming in to places for "shifts."

Nope, it's done in shifts. The only part of the game industry, as far as I know, that isn't done in shifts is public beta testing or private alpha testing to family and friends (like at the moment I'm alpha testing an upcoming MMO by THQ, but since its a family & friends test I can do it whenever I want from my computer)
