Unwelcome News,
The Return HyoYoung paced in her room, her attention focused scarily on Director Shim's office. It was a new experience to her, to listen to what someone did to someone else (and as long as she kept it impersonal, she wouldn't go after someone for doing that to him). Usually she got to see it.
And maybe it helped, to hear instead of see, even in the strangely monotone voice her boyfriend currently used as he described what she could only term torture. His captors had done what they could to break his mind, his will, to get him to do what they wanted. He was incredibly composed, for all that, and she couldn't help but be impressed.
Even if the whole purpose of this invasion was to get her. And they'd used the cruelest method possible.
But finally, Director Shim released him, and she left her room sneakily, going past her sister's room on tiptoe (although she was already in socks so she wouldn't have made any noise) to meet him at the top of the stairs from the offices. He didn't see her until he almost ran into her, and he stared at her in some disbelief. "Hi," she said, suddenly self conscious, aware that she wore only her night gown and a robe over it.
TaeWoon smiled at her, cheer tempered with relief and maybe a little guilt and something else she couldn't identify. "It's way after curfew," he said, but it wasn't anything like someone trying to catch her. It sounded more like a statement of fact.
"I wanted to make sure you're okay."
He laughed, softly. "I am now. When your sister gets her hands on me, I make no promises."
"Oppa. It wasn't your fault."
His smile faltered for just a second, and she understood then what he thought and how he felt. Without hesitating, she stepped forward and hugged him. "It wasn't your fault," she said again, her voice muffled in his shirt.
His arms closed around her and she nestled into his warmth, sighing in relief. "How can you know that?" he asked after a moment.
"Aside from eavesdropping on your conversation with Director Shim, I know you. You wouldn't have done anything like this willingly."
He stiffened in her arms, and then relaxed again. "He said you couldn't see me."
"I couldn't. JaeJoong-sshi was right, I didn't until you just… appeared coming up the walk. Are you okay?"
He tightened his arms around her for a long moment, then sighed. "I will be," he said.
She could believe him, now. Drawing back, she caught his gaze, laying her palm on his cheek when he wouldn't look at her. "It's not your fault."
He looked at her, then nodded and bent down to kiss her.
She knew he didn't believe her. Not yet. She had time to make sure he did.
