“How are you not nervous?” YiJae demanded, glaring at Maggie, the only person in the large room not desperately going over the choreography they’d learned the past couple of days.

“Lack of knowledge,” Maggie said. “I don’t understand why we’re here.”

MinHee stared at her. “You don’t….”

“BoA needs back up dancers,” HyunJu interrupted.

“She doesn’t need them,” SunHyung corrected. “She’s looking to see if she wants them.”

No wonder Maggie didn’t understand anything. “So this is a… tryout?”

“Yes,” MinHee said. “An audition.”

Maggie repeated the word (drat, hadn’t she actually learned that once?), and smiled. “Okay,” she said.

They all stared at her. “What?” she asked. “Practice, practice, practice!”

She took her own advice, working through one of the steps she still had problems with, and soon enough the others had started moving as well. They had to stop fairly soon after, when the choreographer called them to attention, and Maggie stared in surprise when she realized that BoA had come in without any of them noticing.

The next couple of hours were as grueling as anything Maggie had experienced yet, even counting the hour she’d spent under Tao’s tutalage when she was first learning to work with her staff. But it was also fun, and they wound up laughing as much as working. Even if she didn’t get the spot - there weren’t many - she learned so much about the whole process, and managed to get some new vocabulary into her head as well.

“How soon until we know?” she asked, after BoA had gone and the choreographer dismissed them.

“It varies,” YooMi said breathlessly. “Sometimes within a day, sometimes it takes a week or more. That’s what the cameras are for.”

Maggie stared at her, eyes wide. “Cameras?” she asked.

YiJae pointed, and only then did Maggie see. “Oh,” she said faintly. “So… do all the practice rooms have them?”

“Yes,” YiJae said. “A lot of the groups rely on them to improve.”

“Learn something new everyday,” Maggie muttered.

One thing about being who she was, and where she was from: she could spot her name on any list easily. No one had said anything about creating Hangeul for it - did people do that? She had no idea if Tao’s name were ever written in Hangeul or always in the Chinese characters - and she wasn’t about to try, her grasp on the alphabet tenuous at best. So, when the list went up - and someone pointed her to the right one, because really, she needed to learn the script - she found her name fairly near the top.

“Okay,” she said, turning to MinHee, who looked entirely too happy so she must have made it, too. “What does this mean?”

Minhee grinned. “Extra practices.”
