Author's Notes: Based in a massive undertaking I started in April for Script Frenzy and attempted to novelize in summerwrite. It didn't happen. However, as I have this world set up, I'm going to play in it. The master list of fics (including the order) is found here. Written for 24_runes. You can find the meanings of the runes here.
Summary: All gifts come with a price. Especially unasked for gifts.

Ohno Satoshi woke slowly, struggling to remember what had happened. His head ached, a dull pounding behind and between his eyes. He tried to open his eyes, which only increased the pain - it stabbed suddenly into his brain, and he groaned. He heard people around him, then that faded and he slept.

That happened... more often. But slowly, the pain ebbed, slowly the time awake grew longer, slowly he became aware of people, words, the rustle of paper.

"How are you feeling?"

Satoshi struggled to open his eyes, finding it easier now, and that the light didn't hurt so much. "Lazy," he murmured.

The man - unfamiliar - laughed gently. "You might feel that way, yes. How's your head?"

"Less painful," Satoshi admitted.

"Good."

But then everything faded, the edges of his vision blurred, and he watched as a man he'd never seen, fell forward in slow motion, face down on his desk. Whoever he was, Satoshi knew he'd died.

"What did you see?" the man asked.

Satoshi blinked. "Just that someone died," he said, confused - and then blinding pain hit him again.

He did not understand, until a year later, the gift they'd given him - and didn't for another four years after that who he'd seen die. By then, the visions came without the pain.
