NATO had one purpose: contain the Soviet Union.

It served its purpose.

Now, it continues mainly because nobody can figure out what comes next.

Now, it continues because the European Union is a collection of individual nations who are sketchy on what being one country means, and its just easier to make the United States bankroll its security.

Security is hard. And expensive.

And of course, the EU is not, and never really will be, as much as it would kind of be nice, one country. The only thing that can be said for the EU at the moment is that it's slightly more functional than the United States under the Articles of Confederation.

But only slightly.
