It is funny to think, is it not...

Rather, no, it is hilarious to think, at most times, the things which men write down in their books and call truth - and that one in particular. But it is funny to see that they may be right, in their way.

Though that way be ever so unintended, and dreadfully under-examined, but there is yet something there. To recognize, as they do, that knowledge is the root of power; the only power that counts. There is the power of God, granted to his favorites for his own glorification. Such a selfish and unearned power. But the power that rests in any, that then is knowledge, and the ambition, the willingness, the understanding to apply that knowledge to one's own end.

To exert one's own will.

But knowledge can be such a painful gift, it's true. And there is no denying the serpent's gift was exquisitely barbed. It bit the hand which tried to grasp it. So perhaps it is no great surprise.
