"You saw a baby," Beverly said, calmly. Riley sat on the edge of the bed, tie hanging around his neck, pants in his hand. He was readying himself for what would be a painful luncheon involving other professors he did not get along with.

"Reading a book," Riley said, eyes straight ahead.

"Reading...a book," his wife replied
