I just loved this chapter, especially the part about Sara and her brother. It's so sweet and so sad all at the same time. It seemed very real that Sara would hide this behind towels and that Nick would find it accidently. These characters seem to do a lot of things by accident and it just fits. Great job.

Sometimes the best things are accidental - this chapter included, actually; I was stuck on this one for awhile, and then I knocked over my laundry basket. I'm so glad you're enjoying this story, and I really appreciate you letting me know!

I love the quiet, understated tone of this series. The details are perfect: Sara seems just like the type who doesn't keep photo albums, and Nick's association of children's book with his niece seems very in-character.

It's this paragraph that just kills me, though: No recorded address, no records of employment, arrest, or even death. Nick knows all too well what that means; it’s next to impossible to live completely undetected. Years ago, someone must have buried John Doe Number God-Knows-What, a street kid who once gave his little sister a doll named Emily.

I've read stories that say that Sara tried to trace her brother and had no luck, but this might be the first I've seen that takes that idea to its logical conclusion.

If you're interested in seeing a different take on Sara's brother (and a very intriguing twist on Sara's family history), there's a story on fanfiction.net titled "Man," by Lollypop102086.

You have no idea how many times I reworded that paragraph before it felt right, so it means a lot that it stands out to you. Thank you so much for following this series and for taking the time to comment on it.

Thank you as well for the rec; I've just finished reading (and sniffling over) "Man" and I'm about to explore the rest of Lollypop102086's writing.

this was awesome. the book being an old keep safe with the photo is really well thought out, its something that i think sara may have hidden sort of in plain sight hoping nick may find it so that she could talk about her past a little without bringing it up, or i could be completely wrong. but i loved the idea, also because of how cloase nick is with his neices and nephews the childrens book ties nicely in with his character too.

bravo

You'd think I'd know what Sara's motivation was for putting the book there, seeing as I made her do it, but I'm actually not sure. Possibly she did want Nick to find it. Possibly the bathroom/in the bath was simply a conveniently private place to read it. Take from it what you like, I guess.

Thank you again!
