Earthquake!

Just a little one.  Nothing too unusual for California.  The house shook for maybe 30 seconds.  Nothing fell off the shelves.  It's too recent even for USGS to register, so I'll get back to you on the magnitude later.  Could be a small one nearby, or a big one far away.  We'll see ( Read more... )

Oh my God, it was terrifying for me! I was in King Library at the time, there was a huge BOOM, and I honestly thought we were under attack by terrorists. Haha, I'm such a loser.

Depending on the location, sometimes it could be a gentle rolling and other times it could be a big shake. It's all got to do with the earth you're standing on.

Once in Costa Rica I was in class and when a small-ish earthquake hit (like 4.5 or 5) all the students ran out to the courtyard. The teacher calmly came out and said that it was a small one so just come on right back.

Anyway, at least geology class won't be as boring in the next couple of days. Kanye might just ask a real question for once.

Well, for a moment I just thought it was one of the really BIG planes taking off from Moffitt, but then when the shaking kept up, I knew it was the real thing. The worst I've been in was a 6.3 in elementary school, and a bookshelf (flimsy thing full of tiny 3rd grader paperbacks) fell over on to the desk of the most screamy-flighty-girly girl in class. Her screaming was worse than the shaking!

Earthquakes amaze me. What's even more amazing is that you're there, with the earth literally moving under your feet, and as long as no one's hurt, just shrug and say "yeah, wasn't too bad."

I can't imagine the coastline *elevating* Wow.

We had the tiniest of shakes here years ago and I freaked like my cat---crouched close to the floor with my arms spread out and fingers stretched--one of those "whoa, wait a sec...what the--?" And we all walked around afterwards wondering if it actually happend or if the sinus meds were way strong that day..

Glad you all are okay, and nothing fell in!

I was pretty scared for my first earthquake, but after a few of them it gets pretty common. I remember once I was watching the news and it started to shook. The anchorwoman said "well folks, looks like we have an earthquake" (or the equivalent in Spanish). We just kept watching TV and she just kept reading the news.

It is pretty amazing that the earth can move like it's alive. I am just absolutely fascinated by earthquakes (except when I'm getting rocked left and right). I also love volcanoes. I think I have Costa Rica to blame for both of these strange and morbid fascinations.
