Is anyone here a current or former grad student in UC Berkeley's Anthro-Archaeology program? I graduated this past May from Massachusetts College of Art with a bachelors in art history focusing on Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and have started investigating PhD programs in archaeology for Fall 2009. I didn't pursue any degrees in anthropology but I did go to Berkeley and took a couple of undergrad classes in anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. I was pretty amazed by the breadth of subjects and areas covered in the classes which directly reflect the diversity of the faculty.

As far as Mesoamerican studies, when I was there Rosemary Joyce was the only faculty with interest in that area. She has a long-running excavation in Honduras, and it's really interesting to see an area of transition between Mesoamerican and Central American cultural areas.

And one more thing about the place. As far as I'm concerned, Berkeley is a cool place to live, but not everybody might agree. It's an urban setting, so you got the usual suspects (homeless people, graffiti, dirty streets, etc), but it's also very vibrant.

Can you pursue a Phd without a Masters?? This is the first time I have heard this one.
