For theatrical_muse #293 Talk about a news item

The fact that the BBC news channel was on virtually constantly on the huge plasma screen didn’t really bother anyone. It was a useful tool if something happened quickly - news crews were often on the scene well before anyone else. One of the first things you learned while working on the Grid was to tune it out unless it was of interest ( Read more... )

Now that is fantastic. I had never though about how Lucas would see Big Brother, but wow... Voluntary vs. involuntary incarceration. Restricted mobility. Psychologically REALLY interesting. Bravo! What made you think of it?

Oddly, a discussion with a family member about someone we know who is in prison, and with Big Brother on the TV at the moment, and all over the news. It kind of all merged together.

In my fanon, Malcolm keeps an eye on Lucas, makes sure he's coping ok with all the advances that have been made since he was away.

REALLY interesting. Yeah, 'cross the pond, Big Brother is only one of many (I think SURVIVOR is bigger), but when I was over in the UK, I was akind of stunned at how pervasive it is across ALL media: radio, tabloid, reg. newspapers, chance to watch them sleep 24 hours/day... Wow! Frankly, I'm with Lucas. ;-) (As if you coudn't tell). Bravo to you for coming up with it. Seriously interesting.

Have you thought about doing a longer post (maybe sometime, not now - no added pressure) bringing together a BUNCH of the things that have changed in 8 years -- that for Lucas are "new?" You wouldn't think THAT much had, but with tech. zipping by... Even the phones he would have used... And I LOVE that Malcolm is his "voice of reason" / sounding board, helping to ease him back in. GREAT call on your part. YEAH!! ;-)

That's so interesting to see Lucas's reaction to Big Brother - it's easy to forget there are so many things that have changed during time he was in Russia.

As I said to karen747 it was an odd discussion that prompted it, but I have been thinking about what Lucas missed. It was understandable that the show didn't focus on it, but it had to be there.
