I suppose we should have figured that They would have a few tricks up Their sleeves, since They're not quite like the demons from home. Close, but even if Adrac had to listen to Them, and he's a demon king-
We should have figured that things would be different. I don't even think Konstam had.
All of us had gotten to the Old Fort- Me and Konstam, Jamie, Helen, Vanessa and Adam. They had known we were coming, since Adam, Vanessa and Konstam aren't Homeward Bounders, so They could see them on their tables. But They couldn't see us, and so They certainly didn't know about Helen's arm being a Living Blade. Konstam had her break open the door to the Old Fort and that actually seemed to scare the Them that were there-
But then They called the rest, and that little room was suddenly surrounded by others just like it, stretching up and down and to all the sides, melting and twisting- and then it was just like the place Adrac dragged me to where I saw Them the first time. Huge and dark and stretching on forever, full of Their tables and machines. And Them. All of Them.
We had all the weapons and protections we spent the last few days there making, but I think what we didn't factor was Their machines, the ones that can send you anywhere when They make you a Homeward Bounder. They all came forwards, surrounding and separating us-
I lost track of Jamie and Helen and Konstam and everyone-
And the next thing I knew, I was back home. Not Khan Valley, but the small farm where Konstam and I had gone to, to take care of the small demon that ended up being Adrac, a demon king. All out in the middle of nowhere, with none of the others! Maybe They thought the best way to deal with us was to get rid of us and maybe we'd never find the Real Place ever again. But I wasn't just going to dial up headquarters back in Khan Valley and have someone come and pick me up.
They seemed to have forgotten that demon hunters will travel the bounds to other worlds when on the track of a demon. We did that as Homeward Bounders to try to find our ways home, as well! And how could I just go home when everyone else was missing? So I pulled out my scanner and started looking...
