Oh, poor Merry. Frodo's leaving must have been such a grief to him.

oh how poignant-- That scene with Frodo at the grave was so gut-wrenching and angsty-- poor Frodo! It is true that it'll be hard to find something to remember him by if he didn't put those circlets there.
I like the dialogue between Merry and Frodo in here... It's also very like Frodo probably not to like big crowds and to feel melancholy during Yule.

He allowed himself to surrender to grief -not for his parents, for those memories had lost their pain and held only a sense of nostalgia- but for the life he did not get to live, for the lives of those he loved that he would not be here to witness.
My favorite line.

This was a great ficlet, Cali!

Will you continue this?

Thanks! I always wondered what might've happened to those circlets, and this seemed as good an explanation as any. ;)

I'm glad you liked that line. :)

I'll be continuing this series, yes, with one ficlet for each month of Frodo's last year in the Shire. But at this point I don't know how much Merry will figure into future episodes, or how any of the rest of it might tie together by the end. I imagine, though, that I'll bring Merry in again -I just don't know when or how yet. ;)
