We all have cooking disasters now and then- mine was an attempt at shrimp terriyaki. I have not yet lived that one down, and it was a good 12 or so years ago.

I have a couple experiments I have tried in the kitchen. My son (one of three) never lets me forget them. One: I sent him a bottle of A1 Steak Sauce when he was in Iraq. Except that it was brand X. He has forevermore labelled me as cheap. TWO: I once made a batch of brownies, substituting mashed black beans for some of the flour. I'm not sure what that makes me. Weird, I guess.

But my most pertinent memory is a friend who was sharing her chocolate chip cookie recipe telling me that one always burns the last batch of cookies. I smiled because I recognized that she was imparting a universal truth. It's true!

Dad had me and my siblings helping him cook from an early age. None of us had "unmitigated disasters"... and sometimes, our mistakes were actually victories in disguise ( ... )
