“I sometimes feel so sorry for you”, Ianto murmured harshly by Jack’s ear. “You’re so dim for someone who has lived for so many years."
Because he really is kind of dim, isn't he? Jack reacts, he doesn't think. Not the best choice for a leader. And Ianto is so not dim. I don't think people who write him as a woobie (is that the term?) get that. If you leave out Tosh, I think he's smarter than the rest of them put together.

In my mind, Ianto knows Jack better than Jack does, and that's why he stays with him in the bad and the good. He has to know he's loved, even if Jack is a bit flippant about it. There's the power inbalance in their work, and I can't really write about them if I think one of them loves more than the other. We know how Ianto loves, I love to speculate about Jack's love. :)
Yes, Jack as a leader has all the strength and none of the other values that make a leader good. But, he can't stay dead and that's the bigger plus.
