It takes minutes, hours, even days for Kaien to finally respond, but he does. He sends Ukitake a Hell Butterfly, then catches it and hides it away, deciding it would be best to deliver the message in person.

He bows to Ukitake, respectfully.

"I'm not against you, Sir. But I'm not with you, either."

He blinked in surprise, for all Kaien's pride in Seireitei and his sense of honour, he had never imagined the man would choose to settle for Aizen.
