I love FF9 and FF6, but I didn't find FF7 that compelling....so you're not alone.

FF7 remains my absolute favorite in the series, though I'm looking forward to FF13 and FF12 has been just plain fun so far. :) FF9 is a close second favorite, though!

I've heard it said that FF6 has the best story of any of them. FF8 was decidedly weak, perhaps the weakest of the bunch.
