Well, fanfiction is a hobby, like knitting, sewing, painting. Do you need these hobbies legitimized?
No, because nobody goes around saying "knitting is illegal; everyone knows that; you're just lucky that the clothing manufacturing companies can't be bothered to sue you for it."
I don't care if fanfic ever gets the level of literary respectability that haiku has. (Haiku... you know, the poetic form that can be randomly generated based on your recent entries.) I do want people to stop saying it's illegal, and to have its hundred-year-plus history respected as much as any other niche literary form.
