Music, damn music, and statistics

I love music and I love statistics, so I am right in Last.fm's demographic. At the end of every calendar year they run a series of articles on the top scrobbling artists. These articles include graphs of aggregate play information and compare that to your own. This is the first year that I've been using the site for the whole year, so the first year that the graphs are fully meaningful. I'm setting a very low bar for "meaningful" here, of course!

The list starts here, artists 40-21. The only real intersection between my listening tastes and the chart in this section is the Editors at #39. Given my last couple of posts, this should come as no surprise. That said, I only really discovered them last year and I haven't really got into them properly yet. I also have a few Linkin Park and MGMT scrobbles this year, although I haven't heard the latest album from either.

But the main reason I check out this chart is to find new bands that catch my eye. So far, Pendulum (#16), a drum & base influenced dance/rock act is the only such band. They seem to have pretty cool videos too:

Also in the genre-mixing vein, Broken Bells sound interesting. A collaboration between James Mercer of The Shins and Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse and of Gnarls Barkley with a mellow vibe. And again, with more cool videos:

Another cute Last.fm gadget is a plot of a listener's top artists displayed according to the mean age and gender of their listeners. So here's my top 20 artists of the last week. It's a fun little toy.
