I remember when
City of Lost Children came out in 1995 - Christian loved it, if I recall - but I didn't see it at the theatre, I finally saw it on Netflix on Monday. I was tired when I watched it, so I found the first half a little slow and convuluted. The former is required by the latter, however, as those earlier events become clear as the movie progresses - without any patronising hand-holding explanatory scenes.
The movie as a whole reminded me of the
Delicatessen,
Fifth Element and
Léon: The Professional. City of Lost Children was made by the same people as that first movie, so the similarly surrealist style is unsurprising, the second is has something to do with the composition and interaction of Krank and his entourage (and, there's a
My Life With Master game there, for sure), the last is because of the (in this case) apparently unintended romantic relationship between One and Miette. As all three of those movies are among my favourites, it's no surprise that I liked City.
