A woman at work went to Syria for a holiday a few months ago. Admittedly not into a particularly inaccessible part (Damascus and the surrounding area) but she said it was fine. Sometimes the dangers of places are exaggerated, or at the very least are only dangerous to US or UK citizens. As long as you wear a t-shirt saying "I'm a Kiwi" you'd be fine :-)

I know a few of people who have been to Damascus and I've not heard of any of them having issues. I think I'd want to go further afield though.
