Tell em you were raised Catholic. I mean, it's not a lie. Telling members of certain Protestant denominations that you were raied Catholic makes them assume you're religious, but not exactly open to their sermons or services. Though you then run the risk of having them try to convert the Catholic...
There's nothing wrong or betraying in finding religion though. I wouldn't allow one negative experience drive you away from the concept entirely. Not all Christians advocate slavery as a means of choseness or salvation. ;)
i find the best way to avoid going to any service is to find some obscure orthodox rule that the particular church doesn't follow. For instance, I was adopted into a synagogue I didn't want to go to, so I said that it really offended me that the most important prayer wasn't said with covered eyes (which is true, it's an insult because it implies you are able to look into the eyes of god). So if you can find anything that makes you seem more religious (like christina suggested), it's usually good. But this method might be able to help you avoid the conversion attempts...good luck with your escape!
my random knowledge is currently buried under a large oak tree in Bisqualmie, South Dakota. It looks like a drunken ocelot. Can't miss it. You can take some if you want.
