The thing is, they kind of treat everything like it is the end of the world. They might as well. No one expected them to live as long as they have, even at 15, 16, 17, 18. No one expected them to hit 20, to keep climbing up. And they've seen enough shit start bad and turn worse, seen little in consequential things snowball into war between earth and colonies, and uprisings, and continued aggression again, after everyone keeps swearing peace and swearing peace until peace is some meaningless term thrown about for sound bytes. They just handle apocalypse better than everyone else. You can’t fear death when you’re sleeping with him, after all.
