Maki couldn't help it anymore. There wasn't anything there - they were trying too hard to keep something alive that shouldn't. That had long given up on them, so they should do the same back.
"We're not the same people anymore," she whispered to him, hand over his. Yamapi snatched his hand away, and Maki pulled back. There wasn't a frown, there was no sadness. She had faced facts long ago.
Yamapi bit his lower lip, looking away - refusing to meet her eyes. "You're giving up so soon."
"I'm not giving up," Maki said, face filled with determination. She reached for his hand again, but he pulled it out of her reach. "I'm just facing what you need to realize, Yamashita."
The name was harsh and rough against her tongue - it being a long time since she'd used it. "We're not made to be together."
Yamapi turned back, finally strong enough to look at her. "Or we just have to learn to grow up together."
Maki smiled. "Sometimes, Tomohisa, growing up means growing apart."
;kljaskdlfjasdf i couldn't think of anything but angst. Sorry.
Water distorted when you looked through it - your vision was hazy at best, and everything was just skewed. You never knew what was true or what you saw was in fact what was.
Nakamaru went through life looking water, everything hazy and a little distorted. Mostly distorted towards his own likings - it made life easier to get through.
But seeing Maki, everything cleared. It was like looking through air. The sight was sharp and real, and Nakamaru noted every single bit of thing about her - the way her hair fell, the twinkle in her eye, her habit of pushing her hair behind her ear. He took it all in.
Life became even more beautiful. Sharp lines and vivid realizations. It made a difference.
Maki's favourite time of day was sunset. Late evening, when the long last rays of orange arched across the sky. When Tegoshi saw her on top of the hill, just standing and watching the sun go down over the water, something about the image stopped him in his tracks. Her silluette against the sky, skirt barely moving in the wind. He forgot the message he was supposed to take there, and just stood watching her as she watched the sunset, until the sky turned blue and purple and the streetlamps came on one by one.
As the last light faded from the sky, Maki finally turned and stopped, when she caught sight of Tegoshi, standing at the bottom, still looking up at her now illuminated by orange streetlights instead of dusky orange sunlight. Tegoshi didn't have to ask the question, where were you before?
"Standing in the middle of nowhere," she said. And smiled. "Standing in the middle of nowhere, watching the sky fall down."
