job news, another vacation

As you know, I'm looking for a job. Again. And it's become rather apparent to me that I'm quite unhappy in my current field of work, which is Information Technology. I don't mind working with computers so much, but may the goddess strike me dead if I ever set foot in another call center again as anything less than a manager. Customer service? ( Read more... )

I'm glad you're getting to take a vacation, hope it will be a nice break for you.

You'll have your cell phone with you? From my (limited) experience, employers are 50/50 on working around pre-planned absences. If you put in an app on Monday (the 4th) it will probably be Friday before they get to looking at them. Making appointments will start on the 11th for the week of the 18th, so when they call tell them you'll be gone whatever week and could they make it the Monday after that. Just a thought.

Personally, I think you should apply for "roadie" with Godsmack so you can get free tix for your friends. :P

yes, I'll have my fone.

Thanks for the advice regarding searching. And yeah roadie :) I can see that happening ;)

Though going to more Godsmack concerts wouldn't be a bad thing -- only a bit deafening :)

Unfortunately, most companies want to fill positions pretty quickly, so having to wait on a prospective employee to return from vacation just does not happen much these days. There is always someone else right outside the door that is available, and they'll get first crack at it. Then you have the added stress of wondering during the vacation if they filled the position while you were gone, etc...

Also, sitting around stressing(which you almost always do)in anticipation of a pending interview, etc...that really isn't a vacation, now is it?

No calls,no waiting, no stress, just time for YOU. That is what is needed...you deserve it.

thanks ... and you're likely right about that. This is one of the reasons I'm not wasting my time with this sort of thing now -- I'm just trying to get everything ready for when I get back.

Jobs in the arts are hit or miss, from my experience. You have to be in the right place at the right time, or know the right people. But it's possible. Here's what I suggest:

Research theaters and other performace venues in your area and just inquire about potential positions. If no one's hiring, you could always consider volunteering to build up your experience. Community productions, schools, etc. especially, are often in the need for anyone with technical know-how.

See if there's a state-run arts program, or perhaps something through the university? They often have websites with links to employment opportunities in the arts.

Have you considered videography, like for weddings? Sometimes there are companies that provide all those services in one - photographers, videographers, disc jokeys, lighting, etc - for parties. There might be some potential there.

And there's always Monster and the like - though who knows what you'll come up with that way.

You might try for a job at Apple. They are always hiring order entry etc...
