I think people who stay in the same geographic area have an easier time with this. I was just telling one of my very, very few close friends the other day (and pretty much the only one close enough to see on a regular basis) that I've felt shut out of normal human relationships most of my life. Part of it is that I'm not really "from" anywhere, I often get introduced on my house gig as "from Seattle," but I haven't lived in Seattle since 1972. I have no long-time friends there anymore, and very little family. My father is dead, and my mother lives in a nursing home 3000 miles away

Hard or not, it is always worth the effort to maintain old friendships and to build new friendships.

I'm sure it is, if you have some success at it. For me, after a certain period of getting nothing but voicemail, I start feeling like a pest.
