I actually find the word "freedom" leaves a bad taste in my mouth these days, since it's been appropriated by wing-nuts who use it as a synonym for "making lots of money" and libertarian types who argue the 1964 civil rights act was "government overreach" since it interfered with the "freedom" of private business to not serve black people.

Actually, we had some of the real, original freedom riders here in New Orleans recently, completing the trip that was started 50 years ago but stopped in Jackson Mississippi after firebombing and vicious beatings while police stood by. Darlene and I met some of them.

I don't think I would have had the courage to get on that bus. The wingnuts who misuse that word aren't fit to shine those people's shoes.

I appreciate the freedom we have as Americans more each time I travel elsewhere. I worry, though, that freedom is being encroached upon by the right wing, the TSA, the conservative judges on the Supreme Court, etc.
