CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

By the time they got back to the house, it was almost dark. As they went inside, Nyssa pressed some buttons behind the door. Immediately, soft light - like the light of an early morning in summer - flooded through the house. The Doctor, though, seemed more interested in what he could see out of the window.

This is an oddly sweet chapter. I like how Ianto is still very much a product of his time and... perhaps naive is the word I'm looking for, about his surroundings and who he is. I like that Jack looks after him, even when Ianto isn't looking for it.

Yeah, I think for all his sarcasm and occasional cynicism, he is still young and sees things that way.

I think Jack knows that if you're going to look after him, you've got to do it in a quiet, subtle way.

Thanks.

This really has become quite a road to self-discovery for Jack and especially Ianto, hasn't it.
I've not seen many of the Old Who and never encountered Nyssa before on scree so I'm reading this fic a bit like Ianto is living it - without much of a clue but a great amount of trust in the PTBs to get things sorted in the end :)

Aw, thanks!

I love Nyssa, she was probably my favourite companion. But it must be nice to read the story with the same viewpoint as one of the main characters. This is obviously a Janto fic, so I'm not going to go into massive depths about Nyssa, but I couldn't resist bringing her in. Anyway, Ianto finds out more in the next chapter, so you will too :)

I love that even when Ianto doesn't (consciously) want to be 'looked after', Jack is just there, doing it anyway (although he's getting better at doing it subtly).
The other thing that really seems to work in this fic is the way that Ianto, in his way, is taking care of Jack in return (even though I don't think *either* of them really realise it)

This comment made my day. Because if you saw my planning sheet for this story (and you probably wouldn't want to - it's a mess!) that is one of the key ideas running through it. And that's particularly what I was trying to show in this chapter, the fact that Ianto can take care of Jack, as well as the other way around. Sometimes I think the very action of trying to help Ianto helps Jack, so yes, a lot of the time the whole thing is probably unconscious.

I think Jack's figured out that "understated but direct" is the way to take care of Ianto. He doesn't like a lot of fuss.

Thanks for that. I'm thrilled you spotted it :D

Ianto's headache has me worried.

That said, I liked this chapter. It just seemed simple and quiet. Jack and Ianto sleeping together - and I really like that Jack looks out for him as Ianto is so inexperienced with all of this. Great chapter.

Remember, he suffered an injury in the hub before they left. Then he was travelled back and forward in time, was chased by royal guards, hypnotised by the lugma, 'examined' by the Doctor, and flung head-first a wall. And then he arrived in a war zone. I think a slight headache is to be expected :)

Thank you - simple and quiet was what I was going for. And I think, in a way, Ianto is looking out for Jack, too.
