Perhaps the best part of the inauguration...

Hey, I didn’t see this originally because I had to go back to work, and I bet a lot of you didn’t either. But Joseph Lowery’s benediction is everything Warran’s speech wasn’t. It had rhythm and was genuinely moving. I recognize the hymn at the beginning and the end is just awesome. This is the guy Rush said proved the democrats are stuck in the 60s ( Read more... )

It just felt weird and sort of forced. And I was a little taken aback by the repeated JC stuff. “Yeshua, Isa, Jesus, Jesus.”
I agree. Warren seemed like he was sort of milking the moment in the spotlight rather than offering up a no-reservations prayer. But Lowery's benediction felt right to me.

Yeah. As I said below, it felt really strange. Milking, possibly. I also thought it was just too evangelical. From the repeated JC names to ending with the protestant version of the Lord's prayer...didn't like it much.

And, as you've noted on your LJ, now we see what will really happen sans speeches and pomp. I am glued to NPR.

As soon as Warren said "Yeshua," I groaned. If that was an attempt to be inclusive, who was that supposed to appeal to? Jews for Jesus and the other theologically confused?

Thanks for posting the Lowery benediction. The man simply exudes poetry. Warren rankles. Lowery inspires.

I had exactly the same reaction to that. I was watching here at work with a largely Catholic group because many of our clericals are Fillopino Catholics. But there were at least three Jews, several athiests and at least one muslim. (My workplace is pretty diverse). And i just rolled my eyes. And then I started thinking about whether that was appropriate or not.

I also agree with John Stewart that the way he said the kids names was totally weird.

Eh, whatever.
