Story: Reid left after he quit his job and saw Luke with Noah. They meet in New York. Reid calls Katie.
"Reid, you jerk! Why didn’t you call me sooner?" was the first thing Reid heard when Katie answered her phone.
"What? I sent you emails and a Christmas card. That’s more than my uncle gets."
"Then what did I do to deserve the honor of your phone call today?" Reid imagined Katie was rolling her eyes.
"I saw Luke here in New York," Reid blurted out.
"Well, that explains nothing. Didn’t you tell me not to mention his name?" Katie sounded surprised and a little frustrated.
"I may have been wrong before," Reid replied. "I saw him with Noah after we’d had a fight and I quit my job to be with him. I assumed he had run back to Noah so I left. Katie, please tell me what happened with Luke."
Katie was silent for a moment before she responded, "You’re an idiot." She let out a sigh before continuing. "Luke became a workaholic after you left. He was working at least 70 hours a week, dividing his time between the hospital, Grimaldi Shipping and his foundation.
He had to deal with the wing pretty much by himself and Bob couldn’t find a good enough neurosurgeon to replace you, so Invicta was no longer interested. Because they couldn’t find a neurosurgeon to take on developing the new wing, they had to stop the work on it and come up with a different plan.
They ended up putting half of the money that was originally meant for the wing into remodeling the hospital, because Luke had to honor the contracts with the builders. He did a good job." Katie sounded proud. "Especially since he had to work with Bob. Luke resents you for leaving him, but he blames Bob for giving you that stupid ultimatum.
Katie took a breath and continued. "Luke told me: ‘I know that we’d just started dating so I shouldn’t have been surprised that Reid chose his career over me. But if he had asked, I would have gone with him or at least visited him if he would’ve just given us a chance. I was an idiot because I thought we had something special."
Luke looked so sad lying there in the hospital bed when he was talking about you," Katie told Reid.
“Wait? What? Why was he in the hospital?" Reid nearly shouted, ignoring the rest of Katie’s story for a moment. Damn, I should have talked to Luke before I left without an explanation. I am an idiot! he silently agreed with Katie.
Katie made an unlady-like snort over the phone before continuing. "He pushed himself too hard with all his work, not eating properly and not sleeping enough. This caused his immune system to weaken. He ended up with a serious infection that nearly spread to his kidney. He was in isolation for three days before we could see him. Then it was another week before he was released. Bob wanted to be sure he was fit enough."
"So he is okay then." Reid felt relieved. "Do you know why he’s in New York now?"
"Luke’s grandmother Lucinda came back to Oakdale when he was ill and gave him a stern lecture, reminding him about a promise he made to her about taking care of himself. She made him confess to what he wanted to do with his life so he could choose a direction that would make him happiest. At Thanksgiving he told all of us that he wanted to try again to be a writer. In order to do that, he was planning to hire a CEO for Grimaldi Shipping. Also, his work for the hospital was nearly complete, so this freed him to move to New York just after New Year’s. Lucinda gave him her apartment there and helped him line up a job interview at the The New Yorker. He got the job. It’s three days a week so in his free time, he can write the novel that he started on three years ago. He looked so happy when he told us about his plans.
Then his mother started crying and he got those sad Bambi eyes again," Katie explained. "Fortunately Holden got up and gave him a hug while saying he was so proud and that he loved Luke’s plan. Holden took Lily aside and when she returned, she was very supportive. She made him promise to come home every month and made plans for her, Natalie and Faith to go for a visit slash shopping trip. We had a big going-away party for him the first week of January and since then he has been mailing us a hilarious letter about his life in New York every week. His manager at the magazine asked to read them when Luke was talking about them with a co-worker during a coffee break. Now Luke is editing his letters home for a column in the magazine.
You should read them; they’re so funny. He writes them under the title, ‘New in New York.’ You can find them in the archive on The New Yorker’s web site."
"I will. Thanks so much Katie. I need to find him and explain why I left. He deserves to know and I owe him my apology." Reid was feeling so many emotions. He was angry at himself for being an idiot, while feeling worry and pride for Luke as well as sad about his loss of Luke.
"You should." Katie said. "Lucky for you Luke is forgiving."
