exhaustion update and a couple of friday fives

Dec 31, 2024 22:37

I am so fucking tired. My new year's resolution for 2025 is to take my annual leave. I suppose you can make a case that i will be taking my 2024 annual leave in about 3 weeks' time because that's what i saved it for, but turns out going 12 months without a week off is too long. And, quite frankly, it's fucked the hell up that we even have to do it ( Read more... )

I have to hand it to you for eating the raw pork. I'd be so worked up over the possibility of getting worms that I don't think I could do it - even though there are many ways to get worms.

I think it's easier to eat "weird" things when everyone else is too, and in this case raw ground pork is an East German tradition, often brought out for things like birthdays and other office celebrations. I imagine they pick the best pigs to slaughter and process it all on the cleanest equipment for same-day or pretty close to it consumption. In practice they serve it on toast or crusty bread rolls with chopped onion and it tastes pretty much like pâté. I recommend it, if you are visiting East Germany!

Yeah, on one hand, I shouldn't complain because my current situation is better than the usual Taiwan experience, better than China and... actually better than the US too! And 100% white collar work is better than blue collar work in most every way. But it still bums me out when you're working for Europeans who get their 25 days annual leave plus another 10 or 12 days of standard public holidays, and then they still come at you with some mealy-mouthed "well we focus on exceeding the average compensation and benefits package for each office location" as if they are being ever-so-magnanimous when actually it's painfully clear that the team members in Eastern Europe (to one degree) and East Asia (to even more degree) are the cheap laborers who management know they can drive harder and pay less.

Maybe if i didn't have a west European background myself i would accept it, but nah. It really is some bullshit. You can go on all you like about how pay scales should be different in different countries because cost of living bla bla and i can ( ... )

Because rich people have to believe they DESERVE to be rich, (It's kinda the only way you can stomach it, right? Like... being a BILLIONAIRE when people can't afford to eat daily?)
But if they deserve to be rich, that means poor people DESERVE to be poor. So... that's not a problem for rich people to fix, that's a problem for poor people to fix. They should BETTER themselves.

The extra wealth they generate for the top, is the cream that the top DESERVES for all the nice things they do for the poor little people, like pay them poverty wages so at least they're not even poorer.
SO KIND.

Because capitalism needs poverty workers to allow everyone else to feel/live so richly. Slavery (including wage slavery) amasses and centralizes huge amounts of wealth, making luxury more widely affordable while making freedom more rare and expensive.

It was 0 degrees in Busan this morning when I went hiking to watch new years sunrise from the mountaintop, but it didn't feel too bad at all once I got moving.

Enjoy your vacation days. It's been nearly two years since I've taken a vacation, and it feels so overdue!

This post made me think I should be eating much more fruit and veg and less fried foods, eggs and cheese. Especially as I have high blood cholesterol.

As long as you eat most of your meals at home, it really is pretty easy to have a healthy diet, at least in places where fresh produce is easy to access. But even if fresh produce is tough to find you can get by in a pinch with frozen fruit and veg, especially with Asian-style meals where most everything is heated/cooked anyway.
