I am not into the music, but the jelly fascinates me. What an interesting piece of food history he is preserving. How did it taste? Were many others buying it?
It's really hard to describe the flavor, but given it's just sugar and starch, there isn't a whole lot to say about it. It felt more substantial and nutritious than jelly made with gelatin, but not as thick as something like porridge. Here is a video of someone making a very pretty one with brown sugar and potato starch:

My brothers and I have always remarked that the most “authentic” foods of any culture are the ones that poor people eat: it’s the the stuff that is plentiful, filling, that kids can literally grow up on.
Which makes this Chinese style hot dessert sound incredibly alluring.
