This post reminded me of my gran in the Caymans recounting how one of her friends had talked about how she was "descended from pirates". "Oh, cool" someone else had said. "Oh no" had been her reply, "they were terrible people". I guess with the passage of time it becomes more acceptable to ignore the heinous things different historical groups were guilty of, and instead embrace their aesthetics. See also mongols and vikings. I'm sure that real life pirates were far closer to the utter shitheads of black sails than the loveable rogues of One Piece or Pirates of the Caribbean. Obviously, One Piece is a cheerful cartoon where they get magic powers from eating fruit so it's not meant to be taken remotely seriously as a depiction of piracy, but I'm sure you get what I mean!
Horizon: Zero Dawn was excellent (and I even liked the combat mechanics!). If I ever get the time for gaming again the sequel is high up on my must play list.
Real-life pirates are shitbags, i think everyone can agree. We don't need to imagine it because they still exist today, both as the seafaring type in the Gulf of Aden but also as any other organized crime crew targeting the supply chain or opportunistically marauding their way through settlements in war-torn and poorly-policed countries. In the Age of Sail it was even worse because a bunch of pirates were sponsored by the government to do plausibly deniable hits on their political enemies, which i suppose has survived into modern warfare as state sponsorship of terrorist groups, not to mention the shady world of private military contractors
