I wrote something in my 2023 year end meme about how disappointing the internet is, in particular if you try to read anything about a piece of entertainment you liked ( Read more... )

...performative asshattery,

Ya know, I'm the sort of person who when I leave a totally random comment like about a movie in an open forum... I am usually either trying to be informative or encouraging.

I think there are a lot of other people out there motivated by different shit than me and I will never understand. Stuff like being First Comment, by trying to be clever, trying to be offensive, and a lot of people just.. trying to be HEARD, about whatever random shit is in their head at the second, apparently. Like.. they have no other reason than that sorta crap thinking, I think.

The thing is, i can understand wanting to share an honest opinion about something.

Every time i complete (or abandon in frustration) a computer game, i leave a review on Steam. I see it as my contribution back to the community of reviewers whose opinions helped me to the decision to buy the game in the first place. But when i leave a negative review, the goal isn't to shit on the creators, or those who enjoyed the game, it's to help other people who have similar tastes to me make a buying decision.

It seems like such wasted energy to try to use a review for a kid's show as a political soapbox. How miserable must these folks' lives be if they see the spectre of wokeness in even the most innocent show about going on picnics, exploring secret passages and finding hidden treasure?

Honestly, anyone who sees human diversity as a "problem"... whether it is in education, entertainment, or life.... is the person with the problem in that scenario.

Having criticism or negative feelings (and sharing them) is very different from tearing down thing being reviewed. It's always been strange for me to find the people who definitely live under the opinion, "If it didn't work for ME, then it is crap." versus, "I didn't like it and I will tell you why just in case what I think is negative, you will think is a positive... or in case you'd agree with my view/needs/etc."

Oh wow, that show looks really cute! I've just seen the 1957 film. The books are still fairly popular at the library, too. Will see if there is a surge of interest with the new adaptation.

You really can't read the comments, though. Sometimes I scroll through videos and look at the comments, but it's almost always a mistake. Very stupid.

It is really cute! You have to watch it like a child would watch it to appreciate it, i think, because it's full of unrealistic situations. But i think it nails the appeal of the books.

I read Enid Blyton from around age 6, i think. Probably by 10 or 11 i wanted stuff that was a bit more "young adultish". Her style of writing works well for the ages where you are old enough that you can read independently and want stories about children having great adventures, but you're not yet old enough to want to read about sex and relationships and politics and so on.

The other nifty show i have been watching recently is Percy Jackson, which apparently is another kids' book series. It's targeted perhaps slightly older than Famous Five, but it's still quite young. Gives me a vibe of the Narnia series. It is a bit weird to imagine Greek gods all living in America, but thinking about it in that way is exactly the way a kid wouldn't, so eh.
