The IPO push seems like it might drive you away. Do you see yourself staying with this company long term? It would be incredibly frustrating to work and direct a project, and suddenly have all your work ripped away on a whim. I'd be pissed off also.

I will beg you to please not start with the betel nut chewing. The SICU I was working in handled all the oral cancer folks. I had A LOT of micronesian folks be admitted who had oral cancer from betel nut. We removed half of people's faces, and saw others horribly disfigured. Also dealt with horrible cancer cases where the person was pretty much terminal. You have a nice face. I don't want to see you lose part of it.

I don't know about this company. I don't like where the company is headed, and if they had been in this position 18 months ago when i originally applied, i probably wouldn't have applied. On the other hand, it's not a terrible place to work, especially in Taiwan where most of the other choices in my area of expertise are adtech or full-blown cryptocurrency/finance. I really need to sit down and think about my plans. It's not as simple as just quitting when the job starts to suck, because i have my immigration status to consider aswell ( ... )

Oh I suddenly realised you are talking about 檳榔. Now that you mention it I didn’t see those this time, but I guess they usually are along highways and suburbs? It’s been too long!

So sorry about the new sudden ad hoc tasks. Trust me, I feel you. (Almost like a daily occurrence for me)

I guess i tend to go more often along big roads when i am cycling places so i do see them a lot. In cities you definitely see a lot more of the stands in the outer suburbs nearby factories and on the edge of the farmland. I don't know if innercity people eat it as much, or if they do they are just more discreet about it?

Your experience with the bike and the airport reminded me of J.G. Ballard's short stories - of modern life placing machines ahead of people.

I also found your thoughts on the betel nut super interesing - they reminded me of my life in Hong Kong and how the expats used to look down on natives for constantly spitting. It's also inspired me to look more closely at my life in Brazil and see what I can capture.
