Thanks for sharing that, it's really interesting! I've seen a lot of buildings like that, not just in Greece but also in southern Italy as well as China, Taiwan and Laos. I always assumed it was an organized crime thing, where they over-budget and then under-build and somehow that washes the money. It's funny to think it's deliberate, just in case a future generation wants to add on another house upstairs ( ... )

To see the world by foot or bicycle reveals more than whizzing by.
There is a story in the NYT entitled Greece, Battered a Decade Ago, Is Booming.written by Lis Alderman that might interest you.

Thanks for sharing! It was a good read. I think the guy from Tripoli had a good point that whatever recovery is happening hasn't really trickled down yet, and he may be right to be skeptical that it ever will. Perhaps the country - like most - is just changing and the future is in different industrial sectors and geographic locations.

In that second photo, it almost looks like you are crowed with laurels....

I saw antifa graffiti all over northern Italy in 2019 and again in 2022.. especially the college towns/cities like Bologna and Padua, but also in Venice.

Sitting in the sun with coffee and nibbles is a pretty beautiful way to spend time on ANY trip.

Ha! I didn't notice that about the tree sprouting from my head.

Anti-fascist youth movements have been active all over Europe since the original fascists i suppose, but i have a feeling "antifa" as a term to describe them is specifically German. It's definitely becoming more internationalized, though, especially after the Americans started using it. I don't recall seeing it painted anywhere when i first came through Greece, including in ultra-left/anarchist areas of Athens like Exarcheia, but it seems to be popping up a bit more now. I like it. It's snappy and easy to write and it has a Greek root anyway so it makes a lot of sense to use it here.

It was 2016 when I saw the antifa graffiti in Padua and just last summer seeing it in Bologna...

It's just good to know that SOMEONE... SOMEWHERE... is willing to scream that they are not into fascism because America has been getting weirder every day on that point.
