Sometimes when you are traveling you do something stupid or embarassing. Half the time you didn't even notice so it doesn't matter. Other half of the time you do notice but you don't care because you're on holiday, damnit. And the third half of the time, you just feel like an idiot

Well, I'm sorry it was a bad experience. If I were there, I would probably starve to death or just eat whatever random thing I could point at and manage to pay for successfully, so no judgement here!!

You think you might try and learn Hokkien while you're there or is it not worth it?

I have pondered this, and i think it's not really worth it. I was more interested in learning Cantonese in Shenzhen, mainly because it's a language with strong pop culture roots through Hong Kong cinema but also because i have nostalgic memories of it from my youth when it was still a lingua franca in many overseas Chinese communities around the world

"Speaking Mandarin feels *less* like colonialism.." Wow, I think I've heard it all now, folks. In that light, I do wonder how much longer Taiwan will remain independent. If it's just a political project but not much of a cultural one, isn't it just a matter of people losing political will and/or support?

I dunno, it's complicated, and because most Taiwanese people don't seem to ever want to talk to me about anything deep, i can't say that i fully understand the situation
