Today is start of 端午節 Dragon Boat Festival. It's one of the Chinese holidays which i still don't really get what the point of it is. The steamer we have at work sounds a lot simpler than the one you are describing! It's basically like a short, wide electric kettle. It's all one piece, so you just open the lid, pour water through the grate, put your food in a bowl on top of the grate, close the lid and turn it on. That's what i found so appealing about it - it's very easy to understand how it works, and you can't mess up because there's literally just one switch - on and off, same as a kettle. I wonder how you would clean it if there was a major spill? I guess you just don't put stuff in there that would spill, since it's a steamer, so the whole point is to put dry things in it.
