I'm trying to imagine a scenario in which I'd ever think it was okay to grab a total stranger, and the only one I'm coming up with is if they needed CPR or the heimlich manuever. Dear lord people, keep your paws to yourself.

I'm not entirely sure the motivation either. I know that some of my gay (male) friends have had this problem, where straight women will grab at them in really inappropriate ways. Perhaps it's a way for these women to assert or reclaim power that they don't have in interactions with straight men? What they don't seem to realize is that by acting in this way they are being just as creepy as the men who did it to them ( ... )

"I always loved driving at night. Like the David Lynch signature scene, a highway stretching out into forever, just you on the road, alone and free."

Universe, I know this feeling. Much of my roadtripping when I lived in Texas was at night, deep into the Hill Country, where it was quiet during the day and dead silent at night. Being able to pull down a dark dirt road, park near a babbling stream at 2AM, and see the stars and hear the coyotes. I miss that.

One of the problesm with living in the Cascade foothills of the Pacific Northwest, is that if you're not IN the mountains, it's populated. You can't get away from people easily. And even then, you'll come across a community in the woods. And there are so few routes into the mountains because they're proper mountains and go way the hell up.

My middle ground are the forest roads. I drive them when I feel the need to get away, but it also take a a LONG time to get there. And sometimes you come across a community huddled around a mountain lake up there.

Night road trips are awesome. I listened to so much BBC on the long night drives, and house music. Washington to California and back...over and over again. Always at night.

Are the public bikes in Taiwan geared well for hills and the like? Ours here have like three gears, but on the flat parts you can haul ass. It's kinda cool. I like your writing about bikes. I am currently debating whether I get an e-bike or a regular bike. A bike is in the future though.

It's never appropriate to grab strangers unless pulling them out of water, or from in front of a bus.

I agree with the other poster...you look alive!

The share bikes here are three gears, which is better than one (like they had in China) but not especially great for going uphill. In most cases i can plan it so that if i'm on a big hill it will also be on a quiet road where it's fine to either take a break on the side or get off and push, although occasionally i'm on a busy/main road and it's also steep, and then it sucks. I will say that riding a share bike is generally easier than touring when it comes to hills, though, i guess partly because you're carrying much less weight, but also because you tend not to go into the remote areas where you would end up needing to tackle really long or steep hills anyway ( ... )
